The earthquake, which occurred just two miles from the capital of Port-au-Prince, destroyed the state prison, houses, and hospitals. Concrete dust is strewn over every surface. Hospitals cannot accommodate the injured. Aftershocks were felt over 100 miles away and thousands of people have been displaced. The United Nations and United States have already committed aid.
